The following information and guidelines are provided to the SFL Club Representatives to assist them in assigning teams to a given division and players to a given team.
Age Group Divisions
The Under 12 Boys and Girls, Under 14 Boys, Under 16 Boys, Under 16 Girls, and Under 19 Boys are normally broken down into divisions. The division in which a team is placed, is based on information provided by the SFL Club Representative. If the SFL Club Representative does not specify a division for a team, the team is placed in division 1. The following are the general guidelines that should be used in creating these divisions and assigning players to a given team.
Under 12 Boys and Girls
Division 1 is for the better teams who meet the division 2 age criteria and those with players at the top end of the age group (Under 12). Therefore, if you have a younger team (Under 11s) which is very good, then you should move them to division 1 rather than place/leave them in division 2. (Skill level does not affect the placement of teams with players that meet the division 1 age criteria.) The goal of the SFL is to have competitive soccer rather than see who can win by the biggest margin. Division 1 teams play using the 8 v 8 format.
Divisions 2 is for teams whose players are at the bottom end of the age group (Under 11s). If the club has a reason (numbers, family relationships, etc.) to place a player meeting the Under 12 age criteria on a Division 2 team, the SFL Club Representative must first coordinate with the appropriate SFL Under 12 Boys or Girls Commissioner. Skill level or a player wanting to play with their friends is not a valid request for an exception. Division 2 teams play using the 8 v 8 format. Under 11s may play on Division 1 teams.
Under 14 Boys and Girls
Division 1 is for the better teams who meet the division 2 age criteria and those with players at the top end of the age group (Under 14). Therefore, if you have a younger team (Under 13s) which is very good, then you should move them to division 1 rather than place/leave them in division 2. (Skill level does not affect the placement of teams with players that meet the division 1 age criteria. The goal of the SFL is to have competitive soccer rather than see who can win by the biggest margin.
Division 2 is intended to contain teams consisting of players meeting the Under 13 age requirements. If the club has a reason (numbers, family relationships, etc.) to place a player meeting the Under 14 age criteria on a Division 2 team, the SFL Club Representative must first coordinate with the applicable SFL Age Group Commissioner. Skill level or a player wanting to play with their friends is not a valid request for an exception. Under 13s may play on Division 1 teams.
Under 16 and Under 19 Boys
The divisions in the Under 16 and Under 19 age groups are not based on age. Rather they are based on skill level with the more competitive teams being placed in the upper divisions. The SFL Club Representative is responsible for determining the proper division for each of their teams in consultation with the appropriate SFL Age Group Commissioner. The SFL Under 19 Boys Commissioner will make the final determination for the Under 19 Boys.
